Meak Bochea (មាឃបូជា in Khmer) is a significant Buddhist festival in Cambodia, celebrated on the full moon of the third lunar month (often falls during the month of February). This sacred Buddhist festival, known as Māgha Pūjā in several Southeast Asian nations including Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka, has its origins in Theravāda Buddhism. It emphasizes moral reflection, merit-making, and spiritual renewal.
Meak Bochea marks the day when 1,250 enlightened monks spontaneously gathered to hear the Buddha’s final sermon called the “Fourfold Assembly”.
During this sermon, Buddha distilled Buddhism’s essence into three principles: Ceasing all evil actions, performing only good deeds, purifying the mind through meditation and mindfulness. Meak Bochea also commemorates Buddha’s prophecy of his own death (Parinirvana), which occurred three months later. Notably, his birth, enlightenment, and death are collectively celebrated in Cambodia as Visak Bochea Day.
In Cambodia, Meak Bochea holds special significance beyond its historical importance. During the Khmer Rouge regime, Buddhist practices were severely suppressed, and many sacred texts and traditions were nearly lost. The revival of Meak Bochea celebrations symbolized not just religious freedom, but also the resilience of Cambodian cultural identity. In 2025, Siem Reap’s most significant Meak Bochea ceremonies were held at two of the city’s historic wats: Wat Damnak and Wat Bo, both ancient pagodas that hosted the observances on 12th February 2025.
🙏 MEAK BOCHEA, THE EVENING PROCESSION
As dusk settled over the city, a pale orange full moon shyly emerged from behind the trees, gradually ascending until it hung level with the temple roofs. The first devotees, all dressed in white, began arriving at the temple grounds. Meanwhile, monks were busy lighting small kerosene-dipped candles all around the temple. Giving fire to Buddha is very important during the ceremony and known in Khmer as Bochea Broteab.
Candles were placed in front Buddha statues and different parts of the temple, like stairs and alleys. More importantly, candles were used to make a path around the temple so devotees can perform the candlelight procession. Around Buddha’s hands, positioned in sacred mudras, devotees carefully placed lotus flowers as offerings. Some sacred spaces were arranged using candles in circular patterns, while colorful liquids in plastic bottles added another dimension to the luminous display.
Monks and devotees did three circumambulations clockwise holding candles and lotus flowers, each round honors one of the “Three Jewels”: Buddha (the teacher), Dharma (his teachings), Sangha (the monastic community).

The ancient temples of Angkor serve as the backdrop for two annual running events: the Angkor Wat Half-Marathon and the Angkor Wat Marathon (Angkor Empire Marathon). Among these events, Angkor Wat half-marathon (21 km) stands out as Cambodia’s most popular sporting event, drawing thousands of participants from both within the country and around the world to the iconic archaeological site.
🏃🏃♀️ ANGKOR WAT HALF-MARATHON 2025 (December 7th 2025)
Angkor Wat International Half Marathon was started in 1996 by Yuko Arimori, a Japanese Olympian marathon runner who was on the women’s podium on the Olympics Games of Barcelona of 1992 and Atlanta in 1996. For its first edition, the Angkor wat half marathon managed to draw a respectable crowd of 654 runners. This half-marathon is organized by National Olympic Committee of Cambodia and it is recognized by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and the World Athletics (IAAF). This event raises funds for the victims of antipersonnel mines in Cambodia and is supported by numerous sponsors.
The popularity of this annual sporting event continued to grow, reaching a peak in December 2019 when over 12,000 participants signed up. Notably, 60% of the registrants (approximately 7,000) were from other countries. That year, slightly more than 3,000 runners enrolled in the half-marathon, while the remaining contestants opted for the shorter distances of 10 km, 5 km, and 3 km races.
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the event’s long-standing tradition in 2020, forcing it to be held virtually for the first time since 1996. In 2021, strict health protocols limited participation to just 2,500 runners. The 2023 event saw a significant recovery, with 10,154 participants, nearly matching pre-pandemic levels. However, international participation dropped sharply, with foreign runners making up only 35% (3,654) of the total – almost half the proportion seen in 2019. This decline mirrors the decreased sales of Angkor Wat tickets since 2019. In 2024, the event attracted 13,877 participants, the highest participation to date, with roughly a quarter (24%) coming from international backgrounds.

Angkor Wat half marathon route
The Angkor Wat Half Marathon takes place within Angkor Wat archeological park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The race starts and finishes in front of Angkor Wat Temple, before Angkor Wat Sunrise and features a mostly flat course that is approximately 21 kilometers long. The route is paved or smooth red dirt roads and takes runners through several iconic spots, including Ta Keo, two gates of Angkor Thom (Victory gate and North gate) and Angkor Wat, offering a unique and breathtaking running experience. The event takes place in December, which is the dry season in Cambodia, however, temperatures can reach 30°C (86°F). Hydration is crucial, and runners are advised to take special care to stay hydrated throughout the race.

🥇Angkor Wat half-marathon results
Participants to Angkor Wat half-marathon are drawn to the experience of running amidst ancient temples, not to set personal bests. The event has not attracted elite runners, most likely because the prize purse isn’t competitive enough to entice top-tier athletes. For comparison, the Bangsaen21 Bangkok half marathon, offering a $10,000 first-place prize, attracted Kenyan athlete Josphat Kemei, who set an impressive time of 1:01:56 in 2022. This demonstrates how high-caliber athletes can significantly lower race records when properly incentivized. Within Southeast Asia, the Kuala Lumpur marathon offers an even higher top prize of $15,000. The Hong Kong marathon stands out with the region’s largest purse, awarding $65,000 each male and female winner! Due to weather conditions (heat and humidity) it will be very challenging even for top elite runner to run a sub 1h half marathon in Angkor.
That being said, the race record held by Zhan Donglin in 1:05:18 during the first edition in 1996, is quite impressive. Saeki Makino had a very good performance in 2019 with 1:07:34. The last four years, finishing times have been much slower above the 1h14 min mark.
In the 2024 Angkor Half Marathon, local Cambodian runner Ouk Rohit claimed victory in the men’s half-marathon with an respectable time of 1:14:24. The men’s 10K race saw French athlete Lai Terence crossing the finish line in a swift 00:32:12. On the women’s side, Japan’s Koisho Rieko dominated the half-marathon, completing the course in 1:21:01. The women’s 10K was won by British runner Fushia Emily Clayton, who finished with a time of 00:42:11.
📙Angkor Wat half-marathon reviews
The half marathon route is flat on asphalt roads, only around 1 to 2km on dirt roads. The route crosses the outstanding temples of the Angkor Wat Historical Park, making it one of a kind.
The route inside the historical site was amazing. Crowds were so friendly and cheerful. It was so much fun high-fiving the children along the run. Definitely a must-go experience.
It was a great route and amazing location. The area is fairly flat, so not many up hills and down hills. We expected a lot of sun, but actually the race was routed through streets with enough shade, and many water points. It was the perfect half marathon for me as it was my first 🙂 as this event raises awareness and funds for the war victims, it is also nice to know that your money is well spent.
It was my first half marathon. The route was well planned. No hills and lots of shade, enough water points.
🏃🏃♀️ ANGKOR WAT MARATHON (3rd August 2025)
Angkor Wat Marathon known also as Angkor Empire Marathon or Khmer Empire Marathon is a full marathon (42,195 km or 26,1 miles) held for the first time in 2014. Because of the pandemic both 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled. Angkor Wat marathon is taking within the Angkor Wat archeological park that starts and finishes in front of Angkor Wat Temple. Like the half-marathon of December, it is also a flat course on mostly paved roads with scenic routes across many temples. Due to the higher distance to cover, the route is going further east of the archeological park pass, runners passing nearby the imposing structure of Pre Rup temple. If the marathon is too much for you, there is also a half-marathon, as well as a 10K and a 3K run.
🥇Khmer Empire Marathon Results
3,021 athletes participated at the 9th Khmer Empire marathon that took place in August 4th 2024. The 4 races saw the participation of 2,206 Cambodians and 815 international runners from 51 countries (27% share). Van Pheara of Cambodia won the 42km men’s race in 2h 40min 52sec, while Caitriona Jennings of Ireland won the women’s race in 3h 05min 43sec.

💡 Angkor Wat marathon: last minutes tips
Get plenty of rest the day before the race and get a light breakfast at least 2 hours before the race. Before the race warm up gently and do some dynamic stretching, but avoid intense stretching of cold muscles. It is a good idea to take energy gels during the race especially if you run the full marathon. These are very difficult to find in Cambodia. During the race stay hydrated, many water stations stands are available along the way with water and electrolytes.
Should I run in August of December?
If you want to run a marathon, you do not have the choice but need to take part of the race in August. On the other hand if you opt for the half-marathon, you have the flexibility to choose between running in either August or December. It’s worth noting that the weather in Siem Reap during these two months differs significantly. August falls within the rainy season, resulting in higher humidity levels and slightly warmer temperatures compared to December.
The main distinction between August and December lies in the visual experience. In August, you will enjoy the great visual of what we call Angkor Green when the temples begin to be adorned with moss, and the surrounding rice fields display vibrant shades of green. If you have a keen interest in photography, this time of year offers a unique opportunity to capture stunning shots and truly appreciate the lush beauty of the landscape.
Beekeeping is an ancestral practice in Cambodia as evidenced in bas-relief depicting it on the terraces of the elephants, dating back to the 12th century. Nowadays, beekeeping in Cambodia is concentrated in specific areas like Siem Reap, Mondulkiri, and Koh Kong provinces, where honey bees are kept either in hives or on rafters. The honey harvested from these regions is substantial and serves as a valuable source of income for local communities. Starting around the year 2000, some NGOs and organizations (ACCB, USAID, Choice beekeeping) and individuals (Dani Jump, Eric Guerin) played a significant role in promoting sustainable beekeeping practices and educating others about the importance of bees.
ꙮ Rafter Beekeeping: A Unique Approach to Honey Harvesting
Rafter beekeeping is a traditional practice in northwestern Cambodia (Siem Reap, Mondulkiri), particularly during the dry season, carried out in degraded forest areas. This beekeeping method involves placing rafters, mimicking large tree branches, at a slight angle and low to the ground to encourage the settlement of giant honeybees. These bees typically establish their single-comb colonies high up in tall trees, making them difficult to access. Rafter beekeeping provides easy access to the comb and allows for multiple harvests, which can lead to increased honey production.
Sustainable rafter beekeeping involves a gentle and minimally disruptive approach to harvesting honey from the exposed honeycomb at the front of the nest, called the “honey head.” This allows the beekeeper to harvest some of the excess honey without disturbing or destroying the entire colony. The rest of the nest, including the brood comb where the eggs and larvae reside, is left intact. This allows the bee colony to remain viable and continue its lifecycle relatively undisturbed after the harvest.
ꙮ Beyond the Honeycomb: The Mighty Apis Dorsata, Nature’s Giant Honey Bee
Apis dorsata, known as the giant honey bee (Khmoom Thom in Khmer), is a species of honey bee native to South and Southeast Asia. This species is known for its large size (17–20 mm in length) and for its single, exposed combs on tree limbs or roof eaves.
Apis dorsata is closely related to Apis mellifera (the western honey bee), Apis cerana, and Apis florea. In Cambodia, beside Apis dorsata, Apis florea (the red dwarf honey bee) and Apis cerana, Apis mellifera (western honey bee) can also be found as well as some species of stingless bees.
Apis Dorsata are tropical and migrate seasonally, with individual colonies moving between nesting sites during the transition from the rainy to dry seasons. Some recent evidence indicates that Apis dorsata may return to the same nest site, though most, if not all, of the original workers might be replaced in the process. The large body size of Apis dorsata allows increased flight distance and foraging range compared to other honey bee species. Apis dorsata is considered the most defensive of all honey bees and is known for its stingers that can be up to 3 mm long and easily penetrate clothing and fur. These bees are also capable of shimmering, a display of waves that moves across the surface of the nest in a fraction of a second, which is thought to intimidate potential threats.
If you look carefully, you can actually see Apis Dorsata in the temples of Angkor. Thousand of tourists are posing below one of the famous tree features early 2000s Tomb Raider film starring Angelina Jolie. not knowing that during some parts of the year, massive honeycombs are hanging as high as 20 meters up in the tree.
Apis dorsata nests can also be found much lower to the ground hanging under some rooftops at Preah Khan temple.
ꙮ A beekeeping tour with Chhoin, master Khmer honey hunter
On a hot and humid February afternoon, we embarked on a beekeeping tour, taking the road from Siem Reap to area north west not far the Kulen mountains. The trip was organized by Eric Guerin, an expert in sustainable beekeeping in Cambodia and South East Asia. After an hour on a last stretch of bumpy road, we arrived at Chhoin’s family house, the starting point of our beekeeping tour.
We started started walking on a trail, just across the street from the house following Chhoin, his son and grandson. It was a first for us so we did not know what to expect, Eric had just warned us to wear long sleeves and that the ground would be muddy.
After hiking for around 20 minutes through the regenerating lower secondary forest, we reached our first destination, an empty rafter. At this point, Chhoin explained to us, with the assistance of our translator Ranith, the design and construction of the rafter.
The next stop was a live honeycomb. I followed Chhoin closely though some dense vegetation while wearing a beekeeper’s hat when he stopped suddenly and in a the distance in the distance, about 5 or 6 meters away, I then saw a huge honeycomb hanging from a rafter. Despite the fact that we stayed low to the ground, the honeybees started making waves that rippled across their nest, indicating that they felt threatened and were ready to attack. I just had the time to shot one picture. For safety, Jar asked me to go back to the main trail.
Prior to our third and final stop at the beehive rafters, Chhoin and his son meticulously prepared a smoking device over the course of approximately 25 minutes. They gathered various tree leaves, branches, and herbs, tying them together and then igniting the bundle with a lighter. Once the smoking device was ready, we walked over to the nearby rafter.
We approached the nest while making sure to stay close to the white fumes. Not far from the rafter we were struggling to walk and few times I was knee deep into the mud. It was worth it as the honeycomb was huge and already plenty of bees left the nest in chaos because of the smoke.
.
I had my 13mm ultra wide lens plugged on my Fuji so the only option was to get very close to the nest to capture pictures and the nest and the bee’s collecting process. We were all wearing beekeeping hats but Chhoin and his son did not have any protection at all and relying only on their smoking device.
I had my sleeves on and was wearing long trousers but a bee still manage to sting me on my tight. The pain from that sting went away quite fast, so probably the stinger didn’t stay in. I got another sting more painful in on my finger.

ꙮ Challenges Facing Rafter Beekeeping in Cambodia
Rafter beekeeping faces multiple threats, including changing agricultural and construction activities that remove hive sites and nesting habitats, deforestation, pesticide use reducing available forage, lower startup costs of modern box hives leading beekeepers to transition away from traditional methods, climate change and extreme weather events, and lack of training opportunities for younger generations to perpetuate these traditions. Chhoin mentioned that he was managing only 10 rafters compared to 100 only few years ago.
ꙮ Beekeeping in Cambodia | Initiatives
ꙮ Beekeeping trainings
Some efforts are underway to sustain this practice, with government, NGOs, and associations initiating training programs for rafter beekeeping and promoting its sustainability. In 2019, Eric Guerin, commissioned by the WMF, wrote a training manual about rafter beekeeping sustainable practices.
ꙮ Women for Bees | Angelina Jolie
Eric Guerin is involved as well with the Angelina Jolie’s beekeeping project through partnerships with UNESCO and Guerlain. During her last visit in 2022, she launched “Women for Bees“, a training program to support beekeeping initiatives, aiming to empower Cambodian women and repopulate dwindling bee populations, crucial for pollination and food security.
ꙮ Where to buy honey in Cambodia?
You can buy directly the wild honey at Chhoin’s home. The price is USD 10 for 500mL. If you buy honey from a shop in Siem Reap, it is good to know where the wild honey is coming from and what treatments were applied before being bottled. Honey is usually let settle for 4-5 days and filtered with a strainer to remove impurities before being transferred in a bottle or container. Be sure that the container was stored properly in cool, dry place away from sunlight.
The Cambodia Federation for Bee Conservation and Community-based Wild Honey Enterprise (CBHE) are awarding certifications to a network community-based honey enterprises that meet specific standards.

Cambodia is undergoing massive infrastructure development (new Phnom Penh- Sihanoukville highway, new Siem Reap airport) to support its growing economy and position itself as a regional transportation hub.
One of the most ambitious airport construction projects currently underway is the new Cambodia airport Techo Takhmao International Airport located about 30–40 kilometers south of the capital Phnom Penh in Kandal Province. Slated for completion in 2025, the new Phnom Penh airport will span 2,600 hectares (6,400 acres) making it one of the largest airports in the world. The $1.5 billion project broke ground in 2019 and will replace Phnom Penh International Airport for all commercial flights when operational.
Techo Takhmao International Airport will be designated as a 4F class airport, enabling it to handle the largest aircraft including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747. Initial capacity is planned for 13 million passengers per year with substantial room to expand. The airport will have 22 aircraft gates in the first phase. While Techo Takhmao takes over international flights, Phnom Penh Airport will be relegated to domestic flights, private jets, military operations and government aircraft. The new Phnom Penh airport represents a major infrastructure investment that will boost tourism, trade, investment, and connectivity for the capital and Cambodia in a whole. With construction now about 80% done as of late 2024, the airport is a symbol of the country’s modernization and economic aspirations.

The TTArtisan 27mm f2.8prime lens pancake prime lens is a recent offering from the Chinese manufacturer TTArtisan (7 Artisan), released in 2022. This compact prime lens is available for various camera systems including Sony E-mount APS-C and full frame, Fujifilm X-mount, and Nikon Z-mount full frame.
Within TTartisan’s lens lineup, the 27mm emerges as one of the two autofocus available lens, along with the TTArtisan AF 32mm F/2.8. On an APS-C sensor, the 27mm lens equates to a 35mm full frame equivalent of 40.5mm. This moderate wide-angle focal length makes it versatile for travel photography, portraits, and even some landscape shots. The TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 offers an affordable option compared to the Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR lens, which costs nearly three times more.

TTArtisan 27 mm f:2.8 | tests on location
We took the 27 mm for a spin during our Angkor Green photo tour to test its capabilities. Paired with a Fujifilm XS-10, the combined weight of slightly over 550g made it incredibly convenient to carry, even while using a wrist wrap. This initial experience left me with the distinct impression of a remarkably lightweight system.
When you hold the lens for the first time, you will notice its solid and well-crafted build. If you are not familiar with the design of the aperture click, it feels strange at first. Note that you can change the aperture from your camera by setting the aperture ring to A (blue marker). The range of available apertures are the following: 2.8, 3.2, 3.6, 4, 4.5, 5.6, 6.4, 7.1, 8, 9, 10, 11,13,14,16.
An initial limitation that became evident was the relatively long minimum focusing distance of 35 cm, which restricted my ability to capture close-up shots.

7Artisan 27mm flaring and starbusts
Given my frequent outdoor shootings in the temples of Angkor, which often involves capturing scenes with a strong sun or its proximity, one crucial factor is to avoid any unwanted flaring in the images. Flares can pose significant challenges during the editing process.
It’s worth noting that flaring can sometimes be used to alter the aesthetics of a photograph. During my evaluation, the 27mm lens proved itself by passing the flaring test even when having the sun inside the frame of the picture
In the first picture below, I employed a backlit composition to evoke a sense of softness and subtlety. On a related note, capturing images against the sun while using a closed aperture can yield captivating results thanks to the formation of starbursts. In the next two pictures showcased next, I opted for an aperture setting of f/14 to f/16, the highest available on the 27mm lens. The seven-blade diaphragm facilitated the creation of aesthetically pleasing starbursts.

7Artisan 27mm lens sharpness and vignetting
We observed some significant vignetting at f:2.8 until f:8, fading away from f:10 to f:16. At f/8, the lens is sharp even in the corners, however we found to be a bit soft at f:2.8, getting better at f:3.2 do bear this in mind for your portrait photography.

The bokeh at f:2.8 or F:3.2 is pleasant but not as impressive as some other lenses so no cat’s eye bokeh effect here. The bokeh of this lens can be described as pleasing and quite swirly as you can see on the two pictures below.

Using manual focus with the TTArtisan 27mm
In certain shooting scenarios, it may become necessary to switch to manual focus, as the camera might have some issues getting a precise focus on your desired zone. It is important to highlight that this particular lens does not have a manual focus switch. Instead, manual focus has to be set from the camera’s menu.
In some shooting situations, it may be necessary to switch to manual focus as the autofocus may struggle to precisely lock onto the desired focal zone. The TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 lens lacks a dedicated manual focus switch. Instead, the change to manual focus must be made through the camera’s menu system.
To switch to manual focus on the Fujifilm XS10 with the TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 lens attached, first navigate to the camera’s menu system and follow the following sequence:
AF MF
Focus mode
Select MF (Manual focus)
For optimal results, it is advisable to activate focus peaking by following these steps:
AF MF
MF assist
Choose ‘peak’
Opt for ‘focus peak highlight‘
Set it to ‘red high’
The manual focus ring on the TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 lens provides a smooth tactile experience for adjusting focus. Its positioning at the front of the lens makes it easy to access and rotate for focusing. This ease of use is further enhanced by the inclusion of focus peaking, facilitating a more precise accurate focus.
TTArtisan 27mm for Fuji | Autofocus
We tested the autofocus primarily on landscape shots, and there were a few instances where using the single focus point proved challenging for the camera to find focus, especially in low-light conditions. More tests have to be done with portraits using the eye detection as well as with moving subjects.
TTArtisan 27 mm f:2.8 price
The lens was ordered directly from the TTArtisan outlet store on AliExpress where it was available for a price of USD 149, including shipping.
You can also find this lens at bhphotovideo listed at USD 149.
Conclusion
The TTArtisan Fuji mount 27mm f/2.8 lens offers an excellent choice for budget-conscious travel photographers seeking a lightweight (merely 90 grams) yet high-quality lens. While we identified a handful of minor imperfections, some of which can be easily corrected in post-processing, considering its optical performance and an appealing price point of about USD 150, we recommend this autofocus pancake prime lens as a valuable addition to your Fujifilm camera setup.
Spec Comparison: 27mm Lenses from TTArtisan, Viltrox and Fuji
The Viltrox 27mm f:1.2 offers the best optics and low light performance but at the cost of size and weight. The TTArtisan is the smallest, lightest and cheapest but lacks the speed and image quality of the others. The Fuji 27mm f:2.8 hits a nice sweet spot in terms of performance, size and cost.
“City of Ghosts” is an American crime thriller film released in 2002 and that made its debut in 2003 within the United States. It marks the directorial and co-writing debut of the talented Matt Dillon, who also has a compelling leading role. While the majority of the film was filmed in Cambodia, several scenes in the beginning of the movie were shot in New York and in Bangkok, Thailand.
CITY OF GHOSTS 2022 | CAST
Main cast from the movie living outside Cambodia at the time were Matt Dillon (Jimmy), James Caan (Marvin), Gérard Depardieu (Emile), Stellan Skarsgård (Joseph), Natascha McElhone (Sophie)
Finding the right person to portray the cyclo driver proved to be a challenge for the film crew during the casting. It was Matt Dillon himself who hand-picked Kem Sereyvuth after he offered him a motodop ride in the city of Phnom Penh. Kem Sereyvuth, known as Sok in the movie, not only played the charismatic cyclo driver but also played himself in the film, adding an authentic touch to the character.
Additionally, the doorman stationed in front of the Belleville hotel’s reception was recruited spontaneously on the spot, contributing to the movie’s realism and spontaneity.
During the Q&A session in Kampot, it was revealed that the city had a vibrant community of expats, some of whom were hired to portray colorful characters in the film. One such example is Ian ‘Snowy’ Woodford, an Australian expat who added his unique presence to the movie.
CITY OF GHOSTS | FILMING LOCATIONS IN CAMBODIA
The film’s production took place in various locations, including the bustling capital city of Phnom Penh, which served as the primary backdrop for the story. Other cities included Kampot, renowned for its picturesque Bokor Mountain, and Kep, known for its coastal charm. Some scenes were also filmed in Udong and Phnom Chisor, a pre-angkorian temple.
In Phnom Penh, the film prominently featured the Belleville restaurant and hotel, overseen by Gerard Depardieu’s character, as one of its primary shooting locations.
The building that now houses the Manolis restaurant in central Phnom Penh has a storied history. Originally called the Grand Hotel, it was the city’s first luxurious hotel when constructed in 1895. An extension built in 1910 expanded the hotel and renamed it the Grand Hotel Manolis after the owner name from Greece. During the early 20th century, the Manolis Hotel was a popular retreat for wealthy visitors and colonial officials. One infamous guest was the French novelist and art thief Andre Malraux, who stayed there in 1923 after stealing priceless temple carvings from Banteay Srei. He was soon caught and the artifacts returned. The Manolis later served as the headquarters of the French colonial Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia. Today, the Manolis occupies just a small portion of the original hotel but has reclaimed its historic name. Though reduced in size, the building remains a landmark of the remaining French colonial architecture in Phnom Penh. In 2023, a few Cambodian families are still living in some dilapidated areas of the historic building.
The hotel, right across the restaurant, where Matt Dillon was sleeping was the former French police station (commissariat), built in 1892 and remodeled in 1920. You can find the exact location on Street 98 (Okhna Santhormok) using Google Maps.
As of 2023, the majestic and massive century-old building stands in a state of decay, and is enclosed by a metallic fence, nature has begun to reclaim the structure, its facade being almost concealed by trees as it was try to evade the inevitability of change. From a bird’s eye view, numerous sections of the roof can be seen opened to the elements. The old commissariat building serves as a living testament to a bygone era in Phnom Penh, slowly surrounded by ever-rising buildings of the upcoming neighborhood. From time to time, a glimpse of nostalgia comes alive as a cyclo leisurely passes by reminding us of the famous opening scene of Sok driving Jimmy across to the Belleville.
The commissariat was in a recent years on the list of many architecture tours and of few adventure seekers. Few locals were also living inside until recently, Kem Sereyvuth enjoyed bringing some tourists in his cyclo as documented by Jan Mueller in 2009. The building is now in 2023 off limit and waiting for its fate.
MATT DILLON RETURN TO CAMBODIA IN 2023
In July 2023, Matt Dillon made a return to Cambodia, marking his first visit since 2008. This time, his purpose was to revisit the iconic locations where “City of Ghosts” was shot. However, his visit held much more significance than a mere trip down memory lane: Matt Dillon utilized this opportunity to give back to the local film community by hosting a series of engaging workshops and masterclasses at the 2023 Cambodia International Film Festival (CIFF) and was named patron of the festival as well.
A private screening of the film was held in Phnom Penh on July 9th 2023 followed by a questions and answer sessions. Day later another screening, public this time, was organized on July 12th in Kampot. I was fortunate to be around Kampot at this time, scouting for new locations for my Cambodia photography tours.
During the engaging Q&A session held in Kampot, Matt Dillon was joined by John Pirozzi and Jim Denault to shed light on their experiences working on “City of Ghosts” and delve into their special connection with Cambodia. The session provided valuable insights into the motivations behind choosing Cambodia as a filming location, as well as the logistical challenges they encountered during production.
Matt Dillon was in Cambodia early on during the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) in 1993, visiting a friend and went to see Angkor Wat. He also visited Phnom Penh and it deeply impacted him, leaving a lasting impression. “I also went to Phnom Penh and it got under my skin”.
CITY OF GHOSTS FILM REVIEW
This personal review is influenced by my many years living in Cambodia. While I didn’t find the plot particularly compelling, Matt Dillon’s portrayal captures the essence and spirit of Phnom Penh and its people.it is strinking how the city of Phnom Penh have changed a great deal while the people did not change so much. The tuk tuks still hustle for customers in the same way. The children have changed somewhat, now glued to their phone screens playing games, but their fundamental nature is the same. The sounds of the pagodas’ prayer chanting also remain. The film features an eclectic soundtrack that adds dimension to certain scenes.
CITY OF GHOSTS SOUNDTRACK (OST)
The “City of Ghosts” soundtrack boasts a collection of 17 songs, representing an eclectic mix of music, including 1960s-70s Cambodian rock and roll, French pop, and other genres. The soundtrack enhances the emotional impact of certain scenes in the movie.

Siem Reap Airport Transfer | How to Get to Siem Reap Airport (SAI)?
Traveling from Siem Reap to SAI Airport doesn’t have to be difficult with the right planning. While the journey typically takes between 1 and 1.5 hours, knowing the options can help you choose the Siem Reap airport transfer that best suits your needs.
For international flights, it is recommended to depart from the city center of Siem Reap between 3 and 3.5 hours prior to your scheduled flight departure time.
The journey from Siem Reap city to Siem Reap International Airport (SAI Airport) covers a distance of 45 kilometers and involves two primary routes: National Road 6 and the recently constructed Airport Expressway spanning 24.5 kilometers. While National Road 6 is prone to traffic congestion, particularly during rush hours and holidays, the subsequent leg on the expressway allows for a faster transit. The following are the available transportation options for your transfer to Siem Reap International Airport:
Airport Shuttle Services: These shared buses and vans offer a budget-friendly way to travel between the city and airport. They operate daily, making them a convenient option for solo travelers or couples.
Private Taxis: For a more personalized experience, book a private taxi. This option provides door-to-door service and flexibility to adjust your itinerary if needed. While more expensive than shuttle services, taxis offer comfort and convenience, especially for groups or families.
Future Option: Light Rail Trail: while still in the planning stages, discussions about a light-rail trail connecting Siem Reap and SAI Airport are ongoing. If implemented, this eco-friendly option would offer a comfortable and scenic travel experience.

A taxi transfer service to SAI airport typically costs between $30 to 40 USD depending on the car. Taxi fares can vary significantly depending on which hotel you book through, as some offer premium VIP transfers for much higher rates compared to standard taxis e.g USD 70 and up. Taxis offer more convenience and flexibility than shuttles with fixed schedules. They also provide more privacy, as you only share the taxi with your travel companions rather than a larger group of strangers. However, you may end up riding with similar-minded travelers if you happen to hail a taxi already occupied by other passengers headed to the airport.

SAI airport opened on October 16, 2023. On its opening day, SAI airport had 17 flights that landed on its runway. The first plane to touch down was a Bangkok Airways flight from Bangkok.
For those feeling nostalgic for the old tuk tuk ride to the previous Siem Reap airport (REP), the commute to the new SAI airport will be much more difficult. The commute can take between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours and will not the safest way of transportation to the airport. The fare will be around USD 16 so twice more expensive than the bus shuttle and twice cheaper than a private car transfer.
Siem Reap airport was originally designed with Chinese tourists in mind, anticipating a high volume of over 300 weekly flights from various Chinese cities. However, one year after its launch, the airport’s performance has fallen significantly short of these projections. Currently, it only serves a single route to China, operating just three flights per week to Kunming (MU753).
The new Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport was built by a Chinese company, Yunnan Investment Holdings Limited, and was financed by Angkor International Airport (Cambodia) Co., Ltd., an affiliate of China’s Yunnan Investment Holdings. SAI airport was constructed under a 55-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) scheme. These schemes are often used for large infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, airports, and power plants.
In October 2024, AirAsia Cambodia flight KT102 from Phnom Penh and Bangkok Airways flight PG903 from Bangkok are the first flights to land at SAI at 8.30 am and 9.00 am respectively.
Siem Reap Angkor International Airport is managed by Yunnan Airport Group (YAG), a subsidiary of Yunnan Investment Holdings involved in the development, operation, and maintenance of airports and flying fields. YAG mainly operates 15 airports in the Yunnan province such as Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG)
From October 15th 2023, air traffic stopped at the old siem reap airport. In 2024, the airport runway was used a couple of times for a supercar and motorbike event.
Yes, the new Siem Reap International Airport has two designated smoking areas. They are located after passport control and security in the international departures section, near the departure gates.
After breaking ground in April 2019, the first phase of the Angkor Wildlife Aquarium in Siem Reap (Damdek village) finally opened on November 1st 2022. AWA was designed and built by International Concept Management (ICM), an engineering and construction company with an impressive porfolio specialized in aquarium design worlwide. This project, originally named Angkor Animal Kingdom, was assisted locally by LBL International Construction in Phnom Penh. Phases 2 and 3 of this project, which will cost a total of 70 million dollars, should be completed within the next few years.
Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium is home of the first Siem Reap aquarium and the first-ever aquarium in Cambodia. AWA promises an exciting new opportunity for local and international visitors to discover and engage with aquatic life and conservation

After purchasing your entrance at the imposing ticketing office and receiving a bracelet tag with a QR code, you will first enter the section Monsters of the Mekong section which contains many fish species from Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia. This massive 500 cubic meter freshwater tank spotlights the incredible diversity of fish species native to the Mekong River. The star attraction is the exhibit’s namesake – the giant Mekong catfish.
The giant Pangasius (Pangasius sanitwongsei) is one of the two species of giant catfish found in the Mekong river. It has some small anatomical differences with the Mekong giant catfish, (Pangasianodon gigas). Both giant catfish species are listed as critically endangered species. The Mekong giant catfish is the world’s largest freshwater fish (2005’s World Guinness record) with a length of up to 3 meters and a weight of up to 300 kg.
In this section you will also see in separate areas, a burmese python (Python bivittatus) which is is one of the largest species of snakes with a length of up to 6 meters and listed as vulnerable species.
Amongst others, the mudskipper (Periophthalmodon septemradiatus) (ត្រីម៉ាត់ស្គីបភើ (មេភក់) in Khmer) which is on the list of less concerned endangered species, is a fish able to breath outside water.
Next is a large amphitheater where you can seat and have a look at large window from the freshwater tank. Note that the window is a selfie magnet, so it is difficult to have an unobstructed view.
Passed the amphitheater, you will enjoy a more immerse experience by walking into a tunnel below the 600 m3 of saltwater tank, where if you are lucky, you might see sharks and stingrays passing overhead.
ANGKOR WILDLIFE
After exiting the mangrove section , you will find on the outside, after the butterfly garden and turtle pond the otter lagoon. There you will see playful river smooth-coated otters (Lutrogale perspicillata), one the three species of otters like the hairy-nosed otters found in Cambodia. It is worth noting that the smooth-coated otters have been reintroduced in the Angkor park in 2019 by Wildlife Alliance. They are classified as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List.

ANGKOR AQUARIUM | PHOTO GALLERY
In many aspects, taking pictures with either a camera or a smartphone at the Siem Reap aquarium can be a challenge. The best time to do this will be when there are fewer visitors as they tend to stand in front of the glass and give many unwanted reflections.
Since the aquarium is in a low light environment, you will need to compensate with high ISO, which will adversely affect your pictures, especially if you’re using a smartphone.
Due to the thick glass of the aquarium tanks, you will need to switch to manual focus in order to focus on the fish. It is inevitable that distortion will occur depending on the angle at which the photo is taken.
If you are using a mid to high level camera you can control your depth of field to get a better sharpness on the fishes.
Siem Reap aquarium is located about 30 km south east of Siem Reap city in Damdek village (Sotr Nikum district). It is easiest to get there by taking road 6, which is a straight commute from Siem Reap’s center. If you want a less busy road, take the road 60 towards the Angkor ticket center, then turn south just before Siem Reap Booyoung Country Club to go back on road 6 and continue to drive East.
It is worth noting that the Angkor Wildlife&Aquarium is located halfway between Siem Reap city center and the new Siem Reap international airport.
