Sri Lanka, often called the pearl of the Indian Ocean, is on the bucket list of many photographers and rightly so. With 6 sites listed on the UNESCO HERITAGE this small island has much to offer with its pristine lagoons, white sandy beaches, primary rainforests, caves and mountains (many above 2000 meters). For wildlife lovers, it is one of the best spot to observe many animals above (elephants)and below sea level (giant turtles, sperm whales, dolphins). Sri Lanka has a rich history dating back from more than 2000 years. Buddhism was introduced very early on in 3rd century BC and it is the main religion of the country coexisting with Hindus, Muslims and Christians. Formally know as Ceylon was a colony of the British Empire between 1815 and 1948 so English is widely spoken today along with Tamil and Sinhalese. From the 16th century, some coastal areas of the country were controlled by the Portuguese and Dutch and had some influence of the language as well. Sri Lanka has an extensive train network inherited from the British and covering 1500 kilometers. It remains today the more practical means of transport. Sri Lanka has been hit hard by the deadly tsunami of 2014 and by decades of civil war but since 2009, tourism sector has been growing steadily and the country received more than 2.3 million tourist in 2018 mainly from India, UK and China.
