Capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh is situated on the banks of the Tonle Sap, Mekong, and Bassac rivers. It was once known as the Pearl of Orient before the destruction caused by the Khmer Rouge regime. Home of almost 2 million people, Phnom Penh is a city of contrast with a rapidly changing urban landscape. Like many cities in Cambodia, the architecture of Phnom Penh can be divided in several categories: Khmer Empire like Wat Phnom, French colonial including Art Deco, New Khmer architecture or post-colonial (the golden age of the 50s and 60s), modern architecture like the Vatannac tower (2012).

Jean-François, nicknamed Jeff, is a travel and commercial French photographer based in Phnom Penh. Living in the city for the past 15 years, Jeff knows the streets of Phnom Penh like the back of his hand. One of his long term photography project is to document architectural and local life changes of the city. He can also tell you interesting stories of some buildings in Phnom Penh. A former Fujifilm and Sony user, Jeff is currently using Nikons cameras (Z 7II, Z5, Z fc) camera system. Jean-François is the author of a photo book about Phnom Penh entitled "Old French Quarter: Phnom Penh - Cambodia" published in 2020. Between March and May 2022, large prints of some of his pictures were displayed on the outside walls of the French embassy in Phnom Penh.

After surfing the Net for someone to guide me for street photography at Phnom Penh, I came across Jeff Perigois. I contacted him through Facebook and he responded promptly. We met on the appointed date and time and the day was spent in Phnom Penh with no regrets. We walked throughout the whole day from about 8am to 4pm, shooting along the way along the road less travelled by most tourists. We photographed people, markets, old buildings and of course eat in a local restaurant. Jeff knew the route well and found good angles and patiently waited for me as I ‘shoot’. Along the way, I was culturalized by Jeff’s introduction to the city. Jeff was eager to share his settings used for photography which were useful, even when I was in Siem Reap.The day passed too quickly and reluctantly we had to part our ways.I highly recommend Jeff Perigois to any photographers who wants to maximize their precious time of getting the most out of a short stay for photography instead of wandering around.

Although I visited the main spots, markets and museums, cafes and street corner restaurants and alike, I felt there was more to it and reached out to Jeff.
